Cafe of Classy Gallery: Peony House

CNV000038“Peony House” – A cafe house where good art and sweet taste eventually meet … one of my favourite cafes in Bangkok ever!!

In so many ways, sweets and art are created as a perfect couple, and one can not live without the other. Art is indeed fashion and style while sweets are the taste and passion of life. In fact, they complement each other so well that from time to time they are interwoven in design. People blend them so well in whatever way and wherever they think their mixture would apply best. Then here it is, I discovered, a café shop with a nice and lovely décor, “Peony House” – a cafe house where good art and sweet taste eventually meet. This is the place which will keep every nerve of your senses alive, every time you enter the place.

CNV000031Hitting the place is not actually difficult. You walk right into Saladaeng Soi 1 from Rama 4 Road, go straight until the cafe’s nice dark blue sign appears within your sight, and you are then standing right in front of Peony House. Its exterior is all white and so is the interior. Perhaps, you may think this is merely a small cafe shop, but hold that thought for a second until you explore it yourself. When I stepped inside for the first time, I found myself saying ‘Oh, wow!’ and smiling. I was sure I was at the right place for art and sweets. This place is worth several rolls of my film.

CNV000030More than modern, Peony House has a tasteful design and a classy look. As an art lover, this place really is ‘the’ art. And the place is bigger with a deeper and longer squared layout than I thought when looking from the outside. Peony House comfortably divides into three zones which are decorated in subtlely different styles. The front, where you order your favourite pastry, is all white with comfy sofa seats in colours and a large splendid painting on the wall. Next area is the outdoor garden in the middle with plants and flowers making a greenery scene under a bright sunny day, yet the area provides comfortable seats under a tree’s shade. The third zone is the indoor gallery where another ‘wow’ can be exhaled here. I suddenly fell for everything in this zone, all settings and layouts – yellowish, attractive, charming and arty in style. Modern sofa seats are available at every corner while the true gallery exhibiting beautiful paintings is designed at the back for more leisure, ideal for a photo spot. The gallery also enhances its own high class with a piano as a fitting décor as well as the round ceiling lamps which prove a good match for the modern concept of the café. Somehow, everything for me is farther than ‘awesome’ – truly ‘magnificent’.

CNV000021Furthermore, we can’t just ignore the café’s sweets, as we walk into their elegant home. I have got to admit that Peony House is no second after the others in terms of its sweets, especially Blueberry Cheese Pie and Chocolate Classique. Once I took the first bite of each, god, the taste was like heaven.Tasty, sweet and yummy, that’s why they were gone fast and why I wanted to order more. They should have produced more of those, actually. But don’t you worry – Peony House offers a wide range of bakery and pastry items, besides those two, such as Thai Tea Cake and Carrot Cake in an orange cup; as well as a variety of coffee and blended tea.

All in all, Peony House is a perfect get-together place for an afternoon tea or even just a coffee break. The place has completely charmed me, and I am sure it will do the same to you. With everything the place has on offer, I then wonder no more why it is packed every time I visit.

(The photos were taken a few years ago, so perhaps the cafe looks a bit different today.)
